Documentation on Engineered Flood Openings
The purpose of this memorandum is to clarify the alternative measures listed in the Flood Insurance Manual for meeting the National Flood Insurance Program openings requirement. This is written for WYO Principal Coordinators and NFIP Servicing Agents to restate the documentation that is required for engineered openings.
Go to the second page to view the certification requirements for Flood Vents in the bullet point starting with “For engineered openings for which the ICC Evaluation Service, Inc., has issued an Evaluation Report.”

Flood insurance is also limited in areas below the lowest elevated floor, depending on the flood zone and date of construction. These areas include:
- Crawl spaces under an elevated building
- Enclosed areas beneath buildings elevated on full-story foundation walls that are sometimes referred to as “walkout basements”
- Enclosed areas under other types of elevated buildings
